Can AI buildyour websitefor you?

Type a sentence about your business into Wix or Hostinger, and a few minutes later you have a website. That's real now, and it's why so many owners are asking a new question: do I even need a web designer?

The short version: AI builders are good at a first draft, and for testing an idea or a side project they're often enough. They're weak at the parts that win customers: words that sound like you, a design that doesn't look like everyone else's, and someone to call when it breaks. If your website is how strangers decide to trust you, have it built for you. If you're testing an idea this month, try a builder first.

What is an AI website builder?

It's a site builder where you describe your business and AI makes the first version: pages, layout, text and images. Think of it like a meal kit. Everything arrives measured and ready, but you still do the cooking, and so does everyone else who ordered the same box.

This isn't new. Wix launched its first AI builder, ADI, back in 2016. What changed is how much it does. In January 2026, Wix launched Wix Harmony, its new flagship AI website builder, where you shape the site by chatting with an AI agent. Hostinger's AI Builder promises websites, stores and apps from one prompt.

Why is everyone asking this now?

Because the tools got good enough to make the question fair. Pronto Marketing's May 2026 analysis of Google searches found AI is now the top thing businesses search for when building a website. In their words, owners have moved from asking which platform to use to asking 'do I even need a web designer?'

It's a good question, and the honest answer depends on what your website has to do.

What does an AI builder do well?

Speed, first. Wix says it typically takes just a few minutes to generate a site. For an event page, a hobby business or a quick test of an idea, that's hard to beat.

It's also cheap to start. Hostinger's Premium Website Builder was CAN$4.19 a month on a 48-month plan when we checked, and you can fix typos or swap a photo yourself whenever you like.

Where do AI builders fall short?

Mostly in the places customers notice.

  • The words. The AI doesn't know why your customers pick you over the shop down the street, so it writes something that could be about anyone.
  • The look. Builders arrange pieces from a shared library (Hostinger's plans list 400+ website templates), so your site can end up looking a lot like your competitor's.
  • Your time. The first draft takes minutes. The finished site takes evenings: rewriting, choosing photos, testing on your phone, setting up the contact form.
  • The renewal. That CAN$4.19 plan renews at CAN$15.39 a month, so check the price after the intro period.
  • Nobody owns the result. When something breaks, you're the one fixing it.

None of that makes builders bad. It makes them a tool, and a tool still needs someone to use it well.

The first draft takes minutes. The finished site takes evenings.

What do you get when someone builds it for you?

The work, done. A good studio writes your copy, designs pages around your business, builds them, connects your forms and tools, and hosts it all. Your job is answering questions and approving drafts.

The other difference is custom design. Custom means the site is made for your business from scratch, not a theme with your logo dropped in. What we'd tell a client: your site has a few seconds to make a stranger trust you, and that comes down to clear words, real proof and a look that's yours. Those are the parts an AI can't know about your business.

One warning. Some designers install a template and call it custom. Ask to see three of their past sites side by side. If they all look alike, you're paying for a template.

How do the costs compare?

How do you know it's time to hand it off?

Almost anyone can build their own site now. The better question is whether you should spend your evenings on it. A few signs the answer is no:

  • You've started the site twice and it's still "almost done."
  • Customers look you up before they call, and you wince at what they find.
  • Your evenings are worth more spent on the business than on fiddling with layouts.
  • You want it to look like your business, not like the template your competitor picked.

You don't need a big budget for that. A one-page custom site from us starts at $250, written and built for you, which is often the simplest step up from a builder.

So which should you pick?

Try an AI builder if you're testing an idea, your budget is close to zero, or you enjoy tinkering and have the evenings for it.

Have it built for you if customers judge you by your site before they call, you'd rather spend your time running the business, or you want a site that looks like nobody else's. Don't do the middle option of paying for an AI draft and then never finishing it. A half-built site does more harm than a simple one that's done.

If you're comfortable building it yourself, go for it. If you'd rather hand it off, that's what we do at Loud Launch: every site is designed from scratch for your business, written, built and hosted by us. No templates, and no builder for you to learn. A one-page Launchpad site is $250 and you can order online, or book a free call and we'll tell you honestly which route fits. More on budgets in what a small business website costs in Canada.
